L'ABITO FA IL MONACO?

Con il tempo, dovendomi occupare in alcuni lavori dell'editing di materiali promozionali, mi sono fatto un po' l'occhio e ogni tanto vengo preso dalla sconforto, perchè cito sempre la leggendaria sciatteria degli art directors [?] dei dischi di jazz italiani e poi mi trovo tra le mani delle cose che fanno cadere la mandibola come in un cartone di Tex Avery!

Cito solo due casi piuttosto "gravi" data la qualità delle case discografiche coinvolte:

Il primo riguarda la ristampa in cd di "Art Ensemble of Chicago with Fontella Bass", nella serie cartonata [Verve] dei vecchi lp America.

Pur a dispetto di un artwork ricercato [con finestrella interna e altre amenità], sulla costola del cd c'è scritto "Art Ensemble of Chicago with FONTENELLA Bass"

Fontenella???

Il secondo mi è capitato pochi giorni fa: approfittando di una svendita ho preso la recente ennesima ristampa in cd del buon vecchio "Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins".

Tutto bello, tutto bene, poi guardo anche qui la costola del cd e la labe è scritta IMPIULSE!

IMPIULSE???

Sono stupidaggini, è vero, ma quando un disco viene prodotto o ristampato come si deve, anche l'artwork dovrebbe avere la cura che si merita.

PS. Custodisco con cura la mitica prima stampa Splasc(h) di "Urban Shout" dei Nexus, in cui il titolo è scritto "Urban SHUOT"!

Battisti 1

Mi piace osservare le facce perplesse di qualcuno cui racconto la mia passione per Lucio Battisti.

quasi fossi un rinomato teologo che confessa candidamente di passare le proprie notti a sbavare per le hotline nelle tv private

Trovo in realtà che, al di là degli "scheletri pop" che l'armadio di ognuno di noi tiene ordinatamente appesi, i percorsi della musica leggera siano straordinariamente interessanti

Per quanto riguarda Battisti - i cui cd si trovano ora a prezzi stracciati nei negozi e allegati a popolari settimanali in edicola - forse il periodo della metà degli anni '70, tra i meno celebrati e "canticchiati" è quello che offre le migliori gemme nascoste

Titoli come "Anima Latina", "La batteria, il contrabbasso, eccetera" e "Io tu noi tutti" disegnano un interessante percorso "virale" nel cuore della canzone italiana, tra deliri mogoliani, sussulti pop, dilatazioni autoriali e spiazzanti falsetti.

Canzoni come "Abbracciala, Abbracciali, Abbracciati" [trip-hop all'amatriciana ante-litteram], "Anima Latina", un tortino prog come "Macchina del tempo", le deviazioni disco di "Ancora Tu" [basso e batteria sono della premiata ditta Bullen/Calloni] o il funk grattugiato di "Io ti venderei", per non dire di tutto l'arco narrativo di "Io tu noi tutti" - il disco "americano di Battisti, la tentazione FM - dalle stranote "Sì, viaggiare" e "Amarsi un po'" fino ai turgori di "Soli" e "Ho un anno di più", passando per "Ami ancora Elisa" e per quel quella summa dell'egoismo maschile che è "Neanche un minuto di non amore", disegnano una sorta di cuneo personalissimo nel cuore dell'italia canzonettara.

La voce di Lucio, stonata, in falsetto [deliziosa sublimazione del cantare sotto al doccia dell'uomo medio], il soul provinciale e domestico che si piega come una tovaglia di trattoria sui giri di basso, le liriche di Mogol che squarciano germogli di psichedelia casalinga e di poesia straniante [ci vivrà di rendita, mr. Rapetti], insomma Lucio da rivalutare, lontano dalle acque azzurre e dalle calzette rosse, spettro ancora sensualissimo della più lisergica quotidianità.

Braxton? Un vero signore!

"Questo matrimonio non s'ha da fare, né ora, né mai!" deve avere sbottato Cecil Taylor, cui la non giovane età, se da un lato gli garantisce ancora un'energia esecutiva invidiabile, di certo non mitiga le piccole e grandi follie e sgarbatezze caratteriali!

Che il matrimonio con un "consorte" colto e un po' pedante come Anthony Braxton non facesse per lui lo testimoniano trentacinque anni di mancati flirt reciproci e il tragicomico balletto degli eventi sui palcoscenici di Bologna e Reggio Emilia lo ha teatralmente confermato.

Di questa edizione di Angelica ricorderemo così una splendida serie di monologhi, in particolare quelli dello stesso Taylor e quello di Braxton a Bologna, prima del "gran rifiuto". Ricorderemo il passo ieratico di William Parker che cerca di scacciare gli spiriti della discordia dal palco di Reggio con il flauto.

Ma ricorderemo soprattutto due cose:

- l'ingiustificabile e orribile gesto di Cecil Taylor che abbandona sul palco lo sventurato Braxton (tra l'altro nel mezzo di uno starnazzante balbettio)

- la immensa classe e signorilità dello stesso Braxton che, dopo il "quartetto riparatore", sceglie di andare a stringere la mano a colui cui avrebbe fatto meglio a riservare una scarica di calci nel culo.

Che classe, mr. Braxton! Di quelle che non riusciresti a definirla nemmeno con qualcuno dei tuoi diagrammi! Chapeau!

MA KEITH TE LO FA FA'?

Estremamente grata la stampa – quella quotidiana in primis – a mr. Keith Jarrett, che per non smentire la propria fama di ansioso e scontroso artista, ha ben pensato di mandare a quel paese non solo gli immancabili flashatori che lo hanno "costretto" a interrompere anzitempo il concerto, ma addirittura la città tutta di Perugia!
La cosa non è ovviamente piaciuta al direttore artistico di Umbria Jazz e le scuse ufficiali del pianista sono sembrate più di circostanza che non di sostanza.

Al di là della "notizia" – che non è poi molto sorprendente, anche un paio d'anni fa all'Arena di Verona le cose erano andate più o meno così, anche se senza "anatema" – viene una volta di più da chiedersi su quali "squilibri" si regga il nodo artistico/umano/business di Jarrett.

Una sua data in trio – ma anche in solo poco cambia – costa agli organizzatori cifre che a volte si stentano a coprire anche con biglietti salatissimi e cospicui sponsor ed è evidente che questo meccanismo spinge a fare i concerti di Jarrett in posti molto grandi, in cui aumenta la percentuale degli sbadati fotografatori/tossitori/molestatori.

[Che poi, nessuno ha mai insegnato agli incauti cacciatori di immagini che il flash funziona solo se il soggetto fotografato è a pochi metri di distanza? E che quindi le loro "malefatte" sono pure assolutamente inutili?]

Credo sia ora che gli operatori incomincino a prendere coscienza del fatto che se sborsano centinaia di migliaia di euro, è l'artista a avere dei doveri nei confronti del pubblico e di chi lo paga e – fatta salva la dovuta educazione e il sacrosanto rispetto nei confronti della sua musica, che non mi sembra mai mancato – non viceversa.

Altrimenti si rischia di perdere il contatto con la realtà, come mi sembra che Jarrett abbia fatto ormai da tempo, musicalmente [dove continua a riproporre lo stesso, per quanto eccellente e fantasioso, rituale sonoro] e soprattutto umanamente.

Pochi giorni prima dell'incidente perugino, in un'intervista a Giacomo Pellicciotti pubblicata su La Repubblica, Jarrett definisce il modo di suonare del suo Standard Trio come "il più eroico che si possa immaginare". Lasciando ai lettori – qui sotto c'è lo spazio per i vostri commenti – lo sforzo di fantasia per elencare modi e artisti più eroici di chi piglia in un solo concerto i soldi di vent'anni di lavoro di un operaio e giunge con un jet personale, c'è da aggiungere che, per candida ammissione, poche righe dopo lo stesso pianista precisa che "siamo ancora così uniti che non ci sfiora l'idea di qualcosa di diverso". Ce n'eravamo accorti: che eravate uniti [il modo in cui Jack DeJohnette punteggia telepaticamente alcuni accenti di Jarrett è cosa che ha del sublime] e che non vi sfiora minimamente l'idea di qualcosa di diverso!

Stuzzicato poi da Pellicciotti sul fatto che la nostalgia è sempre vincente [Umbria Jazz sembrava davvero Villa Arzilla con gente come Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman e Henry Salvador], Jarrett cade nel più banale dei vizi, quello del laudator temporis acti.

"Non c'è nulla di nuovo in giro, non ci sono giovani musicisti davvero importanti" sentenzia il pianista, puntualizzando poi "almeno non li conosco". Bontà sua!
Che lo scenario complessivo sia molto differente da quello degli anni Sessanta, non ci vuole certo Jarrett per dimostrarlo, ma stupisce e in qualche modo suona stonato continuare a sentire che una volta era pieno di geni e oggi invece siamo costretti al deserto della creatività.

"Alcuni sembrano interessanti all'inizio della carriera, poi scatta qualcosa nell'inconscio" diagnostica il dottor Jarrett "e rifanno sempre le stesse cose".
Ma cosa ascolta Jarrett?
Poco o nulla, come ci dice lui stesso: "non frequento diversi tipi di pubblico, solo quello che viene ai nostri concerti" [ci sarebbe da ridere o da piangere, dato che allo stesso pubblico l'artista riserva le proprie paturnie caratteriali].

Di musicisti che fanno cose nuove e interessantissime ce ne sono davvero molti, forse anche di più di quando il giovane Keith si faceva largo nel mondo del jazz. Peccato che molti siano costretti a stare nell'ombra perché i grandi Festival e le grandi istituzioni preferiscono a caro prezzo la "prevedibile genialità" di un Keith Jarrett.

Forse, se alla fine degli ani Sessanta, Miles Davis avesse detto ai suoi giovani pianisti che non facevano nulla di interessante rispetto ai tempi "eroici" in cui suonava con Charlie Parker, John Coltrane o Gil Evans, oggi il nostro non avrebbe problemi di fobie da flash.
Ma Miles non lo ha fatto. Non per nulla era Miles Davis. Forse anche più scorbutico di lei, mr. Jarrett. Di certo più eroico!

Clark Terry SWAHILI 1955 [Lonehill Records]

La prima seduta di Clark Terry da leader, con un bel gruppettino comprendente Horace Silver, Oscar Pettiford, Jimmy Cleveland, Cecil Payne e Art Blakey, il tutto arrangiato da Quincy Jones che di Terry era stato allievo. Da riscoprire!

Nella ristampa anche una seduta della fine del 1954.

Donald Barthelme BIANCANEVE 1967 [Minimum Fax Classics]

Finalmente ristampato un grande "classico oscuro" della letteratura americana.

Indescrivibile, folle, divertentissimo e tutto da leggere, senza chiedersi nulla!

Dialogando di jazz con Warren Ellis [Dirty Three, Grinderman, Bad Seeds]

Sabato sera ero a cena con i Dirty Three prima del loro concerto veneziano e ho parlato a lungo con il violinista e leader Warren Ellis, che è anche componente dei principali progetti di Nick cave, i Bad Seeds e i più recenti Grinderman

E' stato davvero piacevole e per alcuni versi sorprendente chiacchierare a lungo di jazz, in particolare del compianto collega di strumento Leroy Jenkins, con cui Ellis aveva in progetto di collaborare.

Abitando a Parigi ed essendo amico del critico Alexandre Pierrepont, Ellis frequenta spesso festival e concerti e ha avuto parole di assoluta ammirazione per Roscoe Mitchell, William Parker, Cooper Moore, ma anche per Cecil Taylor e per la Church of John Coltrane [!]

La musica dei Dirty Three non ha molto a che vedere con quelle esperienze, ma l'apertura e la passione di Ellis ai differenti linguaggi è la conferma della sua statura di artista.

Shakin' The Bones

L'inserto/cd del numero di marzo di Musica Jazz è dedicato ai trombonisti italiani [a volo d'uccello] e in particolare a Giancarlo Schiaffini.

Un giusto riconoscimento ad un artista e musicista tra i più originali, onesti e interessanti che ci siano in Italia.

Sono personalmente molto legato a Schiaffini, con cui ho studiato musica d'insieme e composizione a Siena Jazz - tra l'altro uno dei brani contenuti nel cd, "Au Champignons" fu tra i primi a essere usati nel workshop - e il modo bonario e ironico con cui riesce a spiegare con chiarezza i semplici perchè del suo fare musica sono un esempio che ho portato spesso con me.

Bella anche la scelta dei brani del cd, con un brano tratto dal suo "Jazz a confronto" [Horo], alcuni estratti dal recente live del Phantabrass, un'ottimo inedito con Paul Lovens, un estratto dal concerto di Pisa con Lewis e Rutherford e molto altro

Spiace sempre che lo spazio a disposizione di questi inserti sia troppo ristretto per contenere anche solo parte delle tante sfaccettature dei musicisti trattati - e molti altri trombonisti italiani meriterebbero attenzione - ma vale la pena.

Nei primi giorni dell'anno 2007 - in cui cadrà il trentennale della morte di John Coltrane - ci hanno lasciati sia Michael Brecker che Alice Coltrane

Due artisti entrambi legati - sebbene con stili e modalità umane diverse - al grande sassofonista

Oltre al dispiacere per la perdita di due musicisti di grande valore, un buco ulteriore nel cuore nero di un Coltrane che, mi sbaglierò, ma ne sono sempre più convinto, rimane il jazzista meno capito [anche se apparentemente sembra il contrario] della storia del jazz degli ultimi 50 anni!

Quanto sono popolari le proposte del cosiddetto "nu-jazz" [dalle sonorità più o meno elettroniche, più o meno rétro]?

La domanda - non inutile - trova nuova attualità dal momento che la recensione su AllAboutJazz Italia del disco del cantante catanese Mario Biondi

è in pochissimi giorni schizzata in cima alla classifica delle recensioni più lette

E qualche anno fa una cosa analoga era successa con l'intervista a Nicola Conte [che tra l'altro incideva per la stessa etichetta, la Schema], che è rimasta per tanto tempo l'articolo più letto della storia di AllAboutJazz Italia

Ora, senza voler fare delle generalizzazioni che lasciano ovviamente il tempo che trovano, è comunque interessante notare come questo tipo di proposta incontri un vasto interesse da parte dei lettori - e teniamo conto che la recensione in questione non è particolarmente elogiativa, sollevando anche qualche questione di carattere generale.

Che riflessioni, dunque?

Che tipo di pubblico raggiunge questa scena musicale? Allarga i confini del "jazz" a un pubblico più vasto? Spinge poi questo pubblico ad approfondire con altri ascolti?

[Ad esempio chi compra il disco di Biondi è poi spinto a comprare un disco, che ne so, di Lou Rawls o di Johnny Hartman e poi magari uno di Mingus o di Coltrane o di Lee Morgan?]

Gli interrogativi, interessantissimi e da sviluppare, restano aperti...

Softly As In A Morgan Sunset!

È uscito da poco, per l'editore inglese Equinox, il libro "Lee Morgan: His Life, Music And Culture" di Tom Perchard.

Nell'attesa di leggerlo – l'ho ordinato – mi ha molto incuriosito una recensione uscita su The Wire di novembre 2006, nella quale il giornalista Brian Morton sottolinea come Perchard non sia andato nel suo libro molto leggero con la Blue Note, sottoposta a un'analisi in cui le strategie artistiche dell'etichetta perdono molto della loro leggendaria "aura".

Valida o meno che sia l'analisi dell'autore, mi sembra però che emerga – ricordo che anche all'interno della lista della Sidma se ne è accennato su richiesta di qualcuno – la necessità comunque di studiare le vicende della Blue Note degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta sotto una luce nuova e meno "agiografica" di quanto fatto finora. Le strategie commerciali, il reale controllo sugli artisti, il ruolo di "dialogo" all'interno della comunità jazzistica newyorkese, sono solo alcuni degli aspetti da approfondire.

Per tornare a Morgan, sono davvero curioso di leggere la biografia di Perchard – l'autore ha raccolto una considerevole quantità di testimonianze dirette sul trombettista – e anche in questo caso mi sembra che la figura del musicista sia degna di un approfondimento. [Un critico sensibile come Aldo Gianolio gli ha dedicato un bel ritratto su Musica Jazz del marzo 2005, ma anche in questo caso non sono presenti tracce di problematizzazione]

Passando agli ascolti, la Blue Note ha appena ristampato "City Lights", disco dell'agosto del 1957: il trombettista di Philadelphia non ha nemmeno vent'anni, incide per la Blue Note dal novembre dell'anno precedente [e a ritmi piuttosto intensi], il suo solismo è ancora a tratti acerbo, ma interessante dal momento che la maturazione sta avvenendo in modo rapido.
"Eminenza grigia" dell'incisione – che ha tra i suoi punti di interesse anche l'esordio "jazzistico", dopo la gavetta r&b, per il sax tenore di George Coleman – è Benny Golson, che sebbene non presente nella formazione, è l'autore di tre delle cinque composizioni presenti sul disco, proseguendo il lavoro già avviato nei dischi "Volume 2" e "Volume 3" incisi tra la fine del 1956 e il marzo del 1957.

Nemmeno quindici anni più tardi, tra il fumo e il vociare del mitico club Slug's, una evidentemente molto incazzata ex fidanzata, Helen Moore, spara a Morgan e mette precocemente fine alla vita di questo artista irrequieto e un po' arrogante, splendidamente dotato e forse in qualche caso mal consigliato. Una settimana strana, con la festività in mezzo, alla fine due mini settimane!

Otomo Yoshihide - New Jazz Quintet Live in Lisbon [Clean Feed]
Il quintetto di Otomo, impreziosito da un Mats Gustafsson in serata di grazia, catturato dal vivo a Lisbona. Passando da Song For Che a Eric Dolphy, per finire con una strepitosa versione di Eureka di Jim O'Rourke, uno dei dischi più belli di questi ultimi mesi.

Nels Cline - New Monastery [Cryptogramophone]
Il repertorio di Andrew Hill, punto di partenza per una [ri]strutturazione davvero intelligente e ricca di momenti notevoli. Il nuovo disco del chitarrista Nels Cline, con una formazione clarinetto, cornetta, fisarmonica, chitarra, basso e batteria, è tutto da gustare. Menzione d'onore per il grande Bobby Bradford alla cornetta e per le tessiture di Andrea Parker alla fisarmonica.
Poi via di nuovo tutti a ascoltare l'ultimo Andrew Hill!

Karen Dalton - In My Own Time [Light In The Attic]
Una delle voci più personali e emozionanti, finalmente ristampata con il suo secondo disco, "In My Own Time". Angelo infelice, tra Billy Holiday e il Village, adorata da Nick Cave e Bob Dylan, grondante blues e country. Emozionante

Segnalazione anche per un bellissimo libro di racconti:
Richard Yates - Undici Solitudini [Minimum Fax]
Tutto Yates, sempre Minimum Fax ha ristampato nella collana classics due suoi romanzi, vale la spesa: è un narratore efficacissimo e coinvolgente. In questi racconti troviamo una caratterizzazione dei personaggi di sconvolgente semplicità, un tuffo dentro l'incubo della normalità o l'anomalia del sogno.

Addio a Bruno Lauzi

Bruno Lauzi, è morto questa notte a Milano.
Il cantautore aveva 69 anni, da tempo era affetto dal morbo di Parkinson e ad aprile gli erano state diagnosticate delle metastasi tumorali al fegato.

Con lui se ne va un grande autore e interprete della canzone italiana, un uomo ironico e colto, che amava molto il jazz e la canzone americana e che aveva anche inciso, con il suo timbro inconfondibile, diversi standards.

Ci mancherà!

In particolare nelle due serate in quartetto a Reggio Emilia e Modena, con i due bassi - quello acustico di Tony Falanga e quello elettrico di Al McDowell - a rifinire trame di grandissimo equilibrio dinamico, il "celebre" figlio di Ornette è sembrato ancora una volta non solo tecnicamente del tutto inadeguato, ma anche dal punto di vista strettamente espressivo.

In tanti, nella platea e nei palchi dei due teatri emiliani, hanno iniziato a fantasticare su come i due concerti - splendidi - sarebbero potuti diventare assolutamente stellari se alla magia tra Ornette e i due contrabbassi si fosse potuta aggiungere quella di una batteria più "creativa" e meno "casuale"

C'è da sbizzarrirsi, anche senza fare classifiche
Certo musicisti come Hamid Drake, ma anche il più giovane Tyshawn Sorey avrebbero certamente la sensibilità adatta per misurarsi con la musica - sempre freschissima - di Ornette.

Ma si sa, "ogni scarrafone"...
